The Big News is the Whopper Bar
This week’s big news is Burger King’s Whopper Bar. Every restaurant marketing wannabee is going to be commenting on this. The bottom line fact is that we need to praise BK for having guts. Guts to risk, guts to zig when others are zagging. Now if only more companies would just think beyond the norm. Hello Wachovia Bank. How many times have I asked you to serve coffee in the morning at your drive-thru?

Restaurant Marketing: Free WiFi At McDonald’s Starts Today
Restaurant Marketing: Starting today, McDonald’s begins offering free WiFi at 11,500 of its 14,000 U.S. locations. They were previously charging $2.95. This is a heads up to other restaurants: no matter what you think of McDonald’s, if you don’t offer free WiFi, they now have a huge competitive edge over you.

Restaurant Marketing: How Many Facebook Fans? Twitter Followers?
Restaurant Marketing: Relying on Facebook and Twitter to market your restaurant? I ran into a restaurant owner who bragged about his online restaurant marketing efforts of having 3,000 plus fans on Facebook and his thousand and thousands of followers on Twitter.
I asked him, “How many of those are panting heavily just waiting for your next coupon offer?” “How many would frequent your restaurant without a discount?”
There’s absolutely no difference between those guests that jumped sky high to sign up for your email newsletter expecting huge discounts and those who are following you on Twitter ... unless you “weed” them out and determine their needs and interests, which most restaurants will never do.
By the way, that’s why restaurants say their responses and redemptions on newsletter offers have decreased.
