Restaurant Marketing Menus: Make This Pricing Adjustment To Your Menu & Profits Will Increase:
In your menu, check to see if all the final digits in all prices is a “9” versus any other number. Guests perceive a better value with a price ending in “9” versus a price ending in “5”.
Check your menu now and make the change.

We get caught up in all of the ways to advertise and market our restaurants both inside and outside in the trading area that we miss one of the strongest and most powerful ways to increase business ... and that’s by using our mouth! Yes, we’ve forgotten about verbally inviting new and potential guests into our restaurant. It’s the “lost art of inviting.”
How to do this? Take a walk and visit your business neighbors and introduce yourself. Take samples and business cards. Invite their staff in for lunch and comp an appetizer tray for the table. Go to your local Chamber of Commerce meeting ... and invite everyone to visit your restaurant. The possibilities are endless ... and yet inviting is rarely done on a regular basis.
I challenge you to verbally invite 10 different sets of groups or companies in each week. Try it and do the work ... well, it’s actually fun ... and your sales will increase. Amazing, isn’t it?

Whether you liked him or not, Sanjaya made his mark on this season’s American Idol. Not a great singer, yet he had the powerful personality and charisma to Wow his audience into a trance.
You probably haven’t thought of this ... why is it that out of 12 or so contestants on the show, we can’t really identify anyone else? Oh, I like that girl or, that guy sang great. But that’s it. They’re nameless and faceless. Why? Because there’s no story within any of them!
What did Sanjaya have that “differentiated” himself from the other (and even better) singers? Whether it was the hair, the smile, the charisma, it was something ... and the American audience gravitated to it in a big way. The key word is “differentiated.”
It’s amazing that even as a bad singer, he was still the big fan favorite. Why? Because people recognized a difference and grabbed on to it. With no “difference” there’s nothing for the audience to clutch on to. Remember previous American Idol winner Fantasia? What was her point of difference? She had an emotional story ... single mother and couldn’t write. People grabbed on to that and admired her perseverance even more!
Here’s the restaurant marketing lesson—people will clutch on to something when you give them an opportunity to do so. If you don’t give them an opportunity, you become just another restaurant to them. They will remember you if ... you tell them something or ... do something extraordinary.
So, what’s your story? What’s your point of differentiation? Your entire restaurant—every component of it—the look, appearance, the guest experience, your plate presentation, your servers, your gm and owners—they all contribute to your story, and some are even stories in themselves.
What do you have that people can clutch on to and remember you by? Here are two to play with:
1. What are you famous for? Develop it and tell your guests
2. What’s your restaurant’s story? How did you get started in the restaurant business? Tell this story to your guests ... trust me, as boring as it may seem to you, your guests will be fascinated by it.
You have a choice: you can be like all the other restaurants or you can be different and make a difference.

We belong to a Temple in Raleigh, NC. Last week, I fired them. Have you ever fired your Church or place of worship? I suspect not, because it’s not the normal thing to do ... we just go along accepting that what they’re doing is “okay.” But, you do have the power and the choice to expect better and if you can’t get it, then go somewhere else. I chose to do that.
In perspective, I was their customer. I paid annual dues and in return I expected them to live up to certain agreements and responsibilities. A number of instances over the past 8 months made me suspect that the Temple’s infrastructure—those who work behind the scenes to make things happen, were performing at a mediocre level.
In other words, the left hand didn’t seem to know what the right hand was doing. And rather than wanting to be held accountable and apologize, there remained a “holier than now attitude.”
I gave them every opportunity to stand up and correct the wrongs and make them right. But no one stood up. Instead, I was deemed to be the outspoken one who couldn’t connect with them. So, in one quick phone call, I told the membership person that I would not be renewing my annual membership. In other words, I fired them.
Now, I don’t feel extraordinarily proud and powerful that I did this, but like any business, (and a church, temple, place of worship is a business) customers, guests, congregants ... whomever is paying the bill, one should expect a degree of value and that certain expectations are not only met, but go above and beyond the norm. With all of the choices out there to experience a superior product—tangible or non-tangible—whether it be houses of worship or restaurants, there is no place for mediocrity.
So Then What Does This Have To Do With Your Restaurant? A Lot & You May Be Truly Surprised!
If you think, in an air of self-righteousness, that a guest or two hasn’t fired you (your restaurant) this week, no matter how great you think your restaurant is, then you’re most likely living on another planet. So, if you want your restaurant to win the election in your trading area and get the most votes, here’s my platform --
Please, please don’t take your guests for granted. Expect them to have high expectations. Talk to them and listen to their comments, complaints and suggestions. Value them as a “dues-paying member” of your “temple of food.” And, when something goes awry, then apologize and don’t pass the buck; make a commitment to right the wrong. This is one of the best times ever to convert a disgruntled guest into a believer of your restaurant.
Now, if we could assume that, in terms of your guest, you’re only as good as their last dining experience with you, then how many of your guests are firing you because of a mediocre experience that doesn’t live up to their expectations? And, more importantly, how many are firing you without even letting you know about it?
Wouldn’t it then be helpful to “get to them” before they fire you and prevent that from happening? Wouldn’t it then be advisable to get to as many guests as possible to enhance their dining experience and prevent them from possibly firing you? You see, (here’s the million dollar statement) a guest experience isn’t all about the food. Many elements go into the shaping of a guest experience.
Research shows that if a customer goes into a retail store and can’t find what he/she is looking for, then that customer is unhappy at the experience and may not ever return. But, in the same scenario, if the customer goes to the store, can’t find the product and a sales rep at least helps the customer to find it and then explains why it’s not there, and gets it ordered, and promises to call that customer when the product arrives, then that customer will leave that store with a very positive experience, even though the product wasn’t on the shelf.
Marketing your restaurant is not about promotions. It’s about making your guest feel good and important. And, the best way to make a guest feel good is with genuine human interaction. It’s the feeling good that builds customer frequency. And it includes an automatic by-product in that it may prevent a guest from firing your restaurant.
